Nursing-LVN to RN, Associate in Science Degree

Completion of this program will award the graduate with the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and prepare the graduate for a seamless transition to a Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) program. The graduate is eligible to apply for the National Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses (RN-NCLEX).

Program Admission Requirements

Applications are accepted once a year. Admission is offered in the Fall semester only. Visit our website for the application filing period dates.

1. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of admission.
2. An active Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) license without restrictions or limitations.
3. Must have a minimum of 1-year direct care experience as an LVN.
4. Pass the ATI TEAS with a score of 62% or higher on the first attempt to be eligible to apply.
5. Apply to GWC and obtain a student ID number.
6. Complete an online nursing orientation. Upload to the online application, the orientation attestation page .
7. Be in adequate health to perform the duties of a Registered Nurse. These requirements are detailed in the current college catalog.
8. Submit official transcripts* to the GWC Admissions and Records prior to the last day of current application period.
9. Attendance of the “LVN to RN” information session.
10. Completion of the NURS G190 course with a grade of “C” or better.
11. Completion of BIOL G220 Human Anatomy , BIOL G225 Human Physiology and BIOL G210 General Microbiology , with grades of “C” or better and with a GPA of 2.5 or greater within the last 7 years.

*Foreign transcripts must be translated by an official agency prior to application to the Nursing Programs. This is required to evaluate equivalency of both high school education and college courses.

Qualified applicants often outnumber the available spaces in the class. Selection of qualified applicants is through random lottery selection process.

• Notification letters will be sent to all applicants. Selected applicants must accept in writing of their admission offer by the deadline date or an alternate candidate will be offering the space.
• Upon acceptance, applicants will be given information to allow them to complete the program requirements

Program Requirements

Applicants who are selected must successfully meet the following requirements and are responsible for any costs incurred. Specific information will be provided to the selected applicants once admission is confirmed by the applicant.

1. Physical Examination, Titers, and Immunizations: The results of the required physical examination must indicate appropriate physical and emotional health standards for the program. 2.
2. Clear background check and urine drug testing.
3. A current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR card.
4. “Registered Student Nurse” Malpractice Insurance.
5. Uniforms and professional supplies/equipment.
6. Transportation: Adequate, reliable transportation is required.

Students should consult a GWC Nursing counselor to select the best pathway to meet their educational goals. For students who intend to transfer, the choice of general education will be specific to both their major and transfer institution.

Program Level Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

   Provide safe, quality patient-centered care for individuals and families across the health-illness continuum in a variety of settings to promote positive patient outcomes.
2. Evidence-based practice/nursing judgment
   Use information from evidence-based sources to make nursing clinical judgments and provide patient care within a family and community context.
3. Teamwork/Collaboration and Informatics/Technology
   Utilize information technology in collaboration with nursing and healthcare teams to facilitate communication and coordinate patient care.
4. Professional Identity
   Demonstrate professional behaviors and adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards.

These two classes may be taken before starting the nursing program or during any semester of the nursing program. If the student has a Bachelor’s degree they may not need to take these two classes.

These classes count toward the General Education requirement.

Placement in the nursing program is based on an individual assessment of academic readiness, clinical competence, and work experience.

Recommended Program Sequence

These sequences are general course maps for students to finish all major and general education requirements for two-year completion of degrees, completion of short-term certificates, and/or fulfillment of transfer requirements. However, this may not be an appropriate path for all students. The two-year sequence is based on English and Math placement and meeting other course prerequisites. Students are advised to meet with a GWC Counselor to review course selections and sequences to ensure that completion of this program will meet a student's transfer and career goals.

NOTE: To meet GWC graduation requirements, students need to successfully complete ENGL G110 Critical Thinking, Reading And Writing Through Literature , SOC G100 Introduction To Sociology , Ethnic Studies Competency course, and MATH G160 Introduction To Statistics , MATH G160S Introduction to Statistics with Support or ECON G160 Statistics for Business and Economics , or PSYC G140 Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences .
